I have to admit, this game is fun and addicting. After about five years in the making, this was beyond worth it, unlike that FPS game with a too short campaign and an unbalanced multiplayer. I also wonder why people hate this game, especially Call of Duty players. I guess its because the GTA style game completely "noobifies" them, as well as the western setting. But you definetely can't judge a book by its cover, so lets see.
Overview: Red Dead Redemption is an open-world adventure-action game by Rockstar Games, the same guys who made the GTA series. This game was a sequel to another western game, Red Dead Revolver. The game took five years to make, releasing in 2010. The game was worth its wait and received really positive reviews.
Plot: The story in the Singleplayer is about a gunslinger in 1911 named John Marston. Apparently, industrial advancement is taking over the old west (a setting almost no game ever took place), as well as federal agents. The new law wants to get rid of outlaws, so John Marston, being a former outlaw, is forced to track down his old gang members after the federal government kidnapped his wife and son. Marston would also help other people while trying to get his family back, like helping local sheriffs, agents, and even the Mexican Revolution. Also like the GTA games, the story is often dark and tragic.
Gameplay: Call of Duty players may not be familiar with such controls like RDR. But, looking at newcomers, its okay. Once you get use to the controls, you're experienced. It seemed like almost everything was prepared if something happen. Its hard to get stuck on something, and even if you do, simple jumping does the trick. There are also over hundreds of randomly generated events, like stagecoach robbing, duels, somebody committing suicide, helping strangers, or, occasionally, someone taking a piss. Its also not as controlled (except for the main missions) since in this game, you can do whatever you want. Steal, help, kill, save, drink, gamble, helping the law, breaking the law, loot, hunt, gather plants, buying things, selling things, or even jumping into the water and drown. There are tutorials for most of things, popping in from the side. Of course, the game will have glitches like most games. But some are very funny and mostly don't effect most of the game. Even if you crash, you can autosave, though you won't necessary go back to where you ended. For those people who hate the game, play all the way. Just because the first part seems boring, DOESN'T mean the entire game. In fact, you would have loved to had the part, because its a great tutorial, or else you'd probably hate the game more. Even if you completed the game's missions, you might still want to do the challenges and complete everything.
Visuals: One word: Polished. The game looked very good. It was detailed, beautiful, and fun to look at. There are well done cutscenes that look just like the game, so you don't have to complain that the cutscenes look better. Things look really realistic (maybe more if you squint) and is perfect for being on the HD consoles like the PS3 or Xbox 360. Animals look good the humans look good, the architecture looks good, the environment looks good, and maybe I should stop listing too much.
Audio: The game had appropriate music for the situation or environment. The sound effects and music sounds really polished, even though thy might look like they come and go, depending on what you do. The weapons have good sound effects, animals, and others. You might pass some random people and they would talk to you, and you'd be wondering if Rockstar Games really took this effort. There must be thousands of voice clips that made this game. Speak of voice, the voice acting seemed realistic and doesn't sound awful. Sometimes it also works on accent and language, like Mexican speaking some English or Spanish in a Mexican accent, the Americans speaking English in a southern accent, or maybe Chinese immigrants speaking English or Cantonese in Chinese accent. Another point to effort Rockstar, another point.
Reception: According to critics, the game scored super high, even higher than, say, all of the Call of Duty game's average review score. Would you still buy it? A lot of FPS players didn't like it because it was too hard. The Multiplayer seemed too hard because players were destroying them. So? The Multiplayer is an open-world still, mostly no difference to the single player environment. Its just a different style of game, its just that these people didn't experience them enough. Its just like how I play. I'm not much of a Black Ops Multiplayer expert, but I pwn others in RDR. Its the same thing around too. In the universal look, this game is awesome. There are also DLC we can buy, and they're worth it. Especially Undead Nightmare. This gam had me play for a long time. It played it more than Black Ops, even if Black Ops was months newer. But I believe its just me.
Conclusion: This game is the best western game ever made, and anybody would have to admit. Everything seemed polished, prepared, and even beyond the effort. I sometimes thought the game was good enough, and they still had better things. Even the glitches don't affect much, and do not seriously hinder your progress in the game. The Multiplayer even had many features, and I would already give the single player about 9/10
Final Judgement: 9.9/10 (you can't let me get any lower; even if you're an FPS player. More good DLCs and its gonna be a 10.)
