The first time you play Minecraft, you might start thinking, "WTF do I do?"
If you're a usual Minecraft player, then you know the exact answer. Shelter. And you know exactly how to do it. For the newbies, they might say, "Yeah, build a small house out of whatever we can find, or just go to peaceful mode." Well, I can't disagree. But if you're going to do it the EASY, MEDIUM or HARD way, you better listen.
The key elements of your first day in Minecraft are these: The Sun, Wood, Stone, Coal and a large piece of land. You might be thinking how the sun relates to this, I'm just building shelter. Do I need them to grow trees, huh, HUUUUUH? Sometimes, but this is not the case.
The first thing you want to do is go into somewhere that tells all crafting recipes, or from a friend. This is because is you have no knowledge of crafting, this game has no f***ing purpose for entertaining you. Anyway, you wanna know about tools.
After the schooling, its time to do it. First, get some wood. The more you play, the more you know how essential it is, cause you use for almost EVERY TIME. Get like 11 logs or a little bit more, but not too much. It wastes a lot of time.
To know time, look at the sun. This is where it comes in. When it rise, its safe, and you have enough time to mess around. When its above your head, its noon, a warning. When the sun is setting, it tells you, "Whatever you're doing, do it quick and go home. Otherwise, I'll prepare a funeral." At night, creatures of the dark will come and ruin your fun. They can harm you, and if you have nothing to defend yourself, its your bare hands or run.
Once you get the logs, go into your inventory by pressing "i". Put all your logs into any of the four squares on the top right, then start clicking on the grid at the right of those four squares. Keep clicking and placing them in your inventory until your out of logs. Now you get wood.
Get some wood (not all, you need them), put some one square and put some in the square above it. They should both have the equal amount of wood. As you should know, you have to "draw" the objects to craft them, not just placing them in random grids. Anyway, once you do this, you'll get sticks.
Now, you need to make a wooden pickaxe. But you can't, since your inventory is just 2x2. Not to worry, we have something else to craft. Get four wood and place each on a grid in your 2x2 crafting grids. You'll get a workbench, a 3x3 crafting grid. Place it on the ground by right clicking and then right click on the bench.
Lets craft a pickaxe now. Get two sticks and three woods. Stack two sticks on the middle 3x3 column, one on the middle, one on the bottom of it. Now, get the three wood and place it on the whole first row. You should get a pickaxe now. BUT WAIT! Look at the sun. Where is it now. If its noon, hurry!
Now you might just thing, "So, what now?" Get the pickaxe and find somewhere with lots of rock, say, a mountainside. Start holding the left mouse button and dig away. Stop whenever you want, but make sure to have three stone blocks. Get out your workbench and start making another pickaxe, this time using two sticks and three stone. Just like making a wooden pickaxe, replace all the wood with stone, the sticks stay in the same position. Now you get a stone pickaxe, stronger and more durable.
Keeping digging on the stone, try digging down (try mining them stairs so you can get back up.) Eventually, you'll find coal, which is like stone, but has black blots on them. You might find them on the mountainside already, good for you. Use the stone pickaxe (using a wooden one will not get you coal). Get as much as you can, being aware of the time.
Get back up to the surface (unless your shelter is underground) and start finding a spot to dig a small cave to spend the night in. Get your sticks and coal. If you're out of sticks, craft more. Place a stick on the bottom row of the 2x2 grid, and place coal on top of it. Hooray, torches!
Go around your cave and light up the place, using the right click. Why must you light up your shelter? Remember I mentioned about creatures attacking in the night. Well, they spawn in dark places still, even in the day where an area is too dark. Crafting a door is optional, but you can place a block on the front of your entrance so that you can look outside and be safe.
If you still have time, you can mess around. If you don't, mess around in your cave, crafting more things, or expand your cave. Be aware that skeletons can shoot through your door, so either shut it, or make a spot to hide. This should be enough for a night.
Well, that's it for me, hope it helps. You can check it our more at "www.minecraftwiki.net". This is a recommended website for Minecraft, they tell you tips, crafting recipes, etc. Also look at this video made by davidrg4yt a.k.a. "X".
He also has a Minecraft series, I recommend you watch it. Well anyway, hope this helps and craft away!
